LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has rescued a pregnant woman found unconscious on a roadside, provided emergency medical care that led to the safe delivery of her baby, and transferred both mother and child to the Plateau State Government for rehabilitation and continued support.
The 22-year-old woman, Tingni Kindness, was discovered unconscious in the Allen area of Lagos on June 6 after an emergency alert was received by the Lagos State Health Management Agency’s Assistance in Distress (LASHMA-AID) through the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
She was immediately transported to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where doctors stabilised her condition before she later gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Wednesday, Permanent Secretary of LASHMA, Dr Emmanuella Zamba, said the emergency response demonstrated the effectiveness of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s policy guaranteeing immediate medical care for vulnerable residents regardless of their ability to pay.
“Immediately we received the distress call, LASHMA-AID contacted LASUTH to secure bed space and ensured she received emergency treatment without delay,” she said.
Zamba explained that the intervention reflected the state’s commitment to protecting vulnerable residents through accessible emergency healthcare services.
She appealed to the Plateau State Government to support the young mother by providing economic empowerment opportunities to enable her care for her newborn.
Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, said the patient arrived unconscious but was successfully stabilised before unexpectedly going into labour.
“As arrangements were being made to transfer her to an appropriate shelter because she had nowhere to stay, she went into labour and safely delivered her baby girl,” he said.
