KANO, Nigeria – Residents and businesses in Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi and Yobe states will experience temporary power outages on Sunday as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) carries out scheduled maintenance and upgrade works on its transmission infrastructure.
The company announced the planned disruption in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah.
According to TCN, the outage is necessary to facilitate ongoing upgrade works at the Kumbotso 330-kilovolt transmission substation in Kano.
The maintenance exercise will allow contractors to continue the installation of upgraded 330kV Bus II jumpers and replace existing 350mm² conductors with higher-capacity 800mm² conductors aimed at improving transmission efficiency and grid reliability.
“As a result of the maintenance exercise, some distribution companies will temporarily be unable to receive bulk electricity for onward distribution to customers,” the statement said.
The outage will affect customers served by Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), as well as some areas under Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC).
Areas expected to experience interruptions include Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, Azare in Bauchi State, Nguru in Yobe State and parts of Gazaoua in the Republic of Niger.
“Consequently, KEDCO, as well as parts of JEDC and YEDC, will be unable to off-take power for distribution to customers during the maintenance period,” TCN stated.
The company explained that the temporary disruption forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the national transmission network and improve the reliability of electricity supply in the affected regions.
TCN assured customers that normal power supply would be restored immediately after the completion of the maintenance work.
The company also appealed to residents and businesses to make adequate arrangements during the period of the outage.
