ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Examinations Council has released the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination results for 186,291 candidates and announced July dates for re-sit examinations in Mathematics and English Studies.
The release of the results clears the way for thousands of students seeking admission into Senior Secondary School while offering another opportunity to candidates with deficiencies in the two core subjects.
NECO announced the development after the 2026 BECE Award Committee meeting held at its headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
According to the council, candidates from the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory and five foreign countries registered for the examination, which covered 12 subjects.
The examination was conducted between April 20 and April 30.
The results were approved following deliberations by the award committee.
Dr Folake Olatunji David, Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, represented the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, during the meeting.
She expressed satisfaction with the processes leading to the successful conduct of the examination and the release of the results.
The meeting was attended by NECO management and secondary school principals from across the country.
The examination body also announced that the 2026 BECE re-sit examination would hold on July 22 and July 23.
The examination is specifically designed for candidates with deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies or both.
The re-sit gives affected students another opportunity to obtain the qualifications required for progression to Senior Secondary School without repeating a full academic session.
Education experts say the arrangement could help reduce repetition rates and support smoother transitions from junior to senior secondary education.
The Basic Education Certificate Examination remains a critical assessment for students completing junior secondary education in Nigeria.
