LAGOS, Nigeria – The University of Lagos has launched an investigation into allegations of water contamination in some student hostels after reports of vomiting, diarrhoea and skin-related reactions among residents.
The university said it had commenced laboratory tests and a comprehensive assessment of its water supply system to determine whether the reported illnesses are linked to hostel water sources.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the institution assured students and staff that the matter was being treated with urgency.
“We wish to assure all students, staff and members of the campus community that the matter is being treated with utmost urgency and seriousness,” the university said.
The investigation follows complaints, particularly from female hostel residents, about the quality of water supplied on campus.
According to the university, immediate interventions have been introduced to safeguard student welfare while tests are conducted.
“Relevant departments have commenced a thorough assessment of the water supply system, including necessary water quality tests, to determine the accuracy of the reports and identify any potential risks,” the statement said.
The Students’ Union said no definitive link had yet been established between the illnesses and the water supply.
“According to medical personnel at the University Medical Centre, the cases that have been presented and assessed thus far have not been medically linked to our water supply,” the union stated.
However, an inspection found that discoloured water in one hostel block originated from a borehole serving the facility.
The university immediately suspended supply from the affected source and introduced alternative water arrangements.
Water samples have been sent for laboratory analysis, with results expected within 48 hours.
