OYO, Nigeria – Police Rescue Adelabu’s Sister and her twin sons after a fierce gun battle with suspected kidnappers in Oyo State, marking a major breakthrough in a case that has heightened security concerns across the region.
The Nigeria Police Force says it successfully rescued Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, during an operation conducted on Saturday evening.
Police sources confirmed that two suspected kidnappers were killed during an exchange of gunfire with operatives, while security personnel recovered two firearms from the scene.
The victims, including the younger sister of former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, were abducted on 3 June while travelling to school in Ibadan.
According to police sources, intelligence-led operations and sustained pressure on the kidnappers forced the criminal gang into a confrontation with security operatives.
The operation resulted in the safe rescue of all three victims.
Authorities said security forces continue to search surrounding communities for other members of the kidnapping syndicate.
Investigators believe some suspects escaped with gunshot wounds.
Earlier in the week, Adelabu’s media aide, Femi Awogboro, appealed for calm following the abduction.
“We are deeply distressed by this unfortunate incident but remain hopeful that the victims will be rescued safely. We appeal to the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and support ongoing efforts with prayers,” he said.
The successful rescue comes days after Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde publicly assured Adelabu that security agencies were intensifying efforts to secure the victims’ release.
In a statement posted on social media, the governor said security agencies were working relentlessly to ensure the safe return of the abductees while strengthening the state’s broader security architecture.
The kidnapping had sparked widespread concern among residents and renewed debate over insecurity in Oyo State.
The incident followed another high-profile abduction involving more than 40 students and teachers in Orire Local Government Area.
Security experts say the rescue operation demonstrates the growing importance of intelligence gathering and coordinated tactical responses in tackling kidnapping networks across Nigeria.
Police authorities have pledged to continue pursuing the fleeing suspects while strengthening measures aimed at combating violent crime.
