GOMBE, Nigeria – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged residents living in flood-prone communities across Gombe State to relocate to safer areas as rainfall intensifies and the risk of flooding increases.
In a public advisory issued on Monday, NEMA warned that vulnerable households must take immediate preventive measures to avoid loss of lives and property during the peak of the rainy season.
The agency’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, called on residents in high-risk locations to remain vigilant and comply with official safety directives. NEMA Urges Gombe Residents to Relocate as Flood Risks Rise
“Take early action as the rainy season intensifies,” Umar said.
She advised residents to clear blocked drainage systems, avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, and relocate from riverine communities to higher ground where necessary.
“Clear drains and gutters, avoid walking or driving through floodwater, leave riverine areas for higher ground, and follow official alerts,” she stated.
Umar stressed that disaster preparedness remains the most effective way to minimise the devastating impact of seasonal flooding.
“Preparedness saves lives. Act now, stay safe,” she added.
The agency also encouraged residents to cooperate with emergency responders and report flood-related incidents through its emergency helpline, 0800CALLNEMA (080022556362).
The warning comes amid growing concerns over flooding in several states following sustained heavy rainfall across parts of Nigeria. Emergency management authorities have repeatedly cautioned residents in flood-risk areas to remain alert and adhere strictly to weather advisories.
Experts warn that poor drainage systems, blocked waterways and settlement in floodplains continue to increase flood vulnerability in many communities.
