OWERRI, Nigeria – The Imo State Police Command has arrested three students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) over the alleged killing of a 100-level undergraduate, Chinedu Chibuzor Christogonus, following accusations of theft.
The 21-year-old Cyber Security student and member of the Man O’ War organisation reportedly died after he was allegedly assaulted by fellow members who accused him of stealing ₦13,500.
Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, on Sunday said preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was restrained and subjected to severe assault that resulted in critical injuries.
According to the police, the suspects are Chukwuemeka Benedict, 21; Kelechi Gospel Ikenna, 24; and Obioma Anastasia, 21, all final-year students of FUTO.
“Initial findings indicate that the deceased was allegedly restrained and assaulted, resulting in critical injuries. He was subsequently rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel,” Okoye said.
The arrests followed a directive from Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, shortly after the incident was reported.
Police said relevant evidence has been recovered while the victim’s body has been deposited in a morgue pending autopsy.
Bosso ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation and directed detectives to identify all individuals connected to the incident.
“No suspect will be shielded from prosecution regardless of status,” the commissioner said, assuring the victim’s family and the university community of a thorough and professional investigation.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
