OYO, Nigeria – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a solidarity protest over the continued abduction of pupils and teachers kidnapped during attacks on schools in Oyo State.
NANS President Akinteye Babatunde disclosed the plan in a statement on Friday, calling on students, civil society groups and concerned Nigerians to join the demonstration scheduled for Monday, 1 June.
The protest comes two weeks after gunmen invaded schools in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting 39 students and seven teachers.
A teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was killed during the attack, while a two-year-old child, Christianah Akanbi, was among those abducted.
Babatunde described the prolonged captivity of the victims as unacceptable and urged authorities to intensify rescue efforts.
“It has been two weeks since this tragic incident happened, and the victims are still in captivity. We cannot continue to keep quiet at a time like this,” he said.
According to him, participants will visit Community High School/Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele; L.A. Primary School, Ahoro-Esiele; and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, where the attacks occurred.
The delegation will also meet the Oyo State Commissioner of Police and officials of the Department of State Services before embarking on a peaceful march against insecurity in Ibadan.
Babatunde said the rally aims to draw national attention to the plight of the victims and pressure security agencies to secure their release.
He urged student leaders and citizens across the country to support the movement and demand justice for those affected.
The planned protest adds to growing public concern over school insecurity and rising incidents of kidnapping targeting students and education workers.
