ABUJA, Nigeria – FG vows stronger school protection after student abductions in Oyo, Borno
The Federal Ministry of Education has condemned recent school kidnappings in Oyo State and Borno State, assuring Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to rescue the abducted students.
In a statement released on Thursday, ministry spokesperson Folasade Boriowo says Education Minister Maruf Alausa describes the attacks as disturbing and unacceptable.
“No child should live in fear simply because they want to go to school,” Alausa says.
“The government is determined to protect learners and strengthen safety measures across educational institutions.”
The ministry says the Federal Government will continue collaborating with security agencies and state authorities to improve school safety through stronger surveillance systems, rapid emergency response and enforcement of protective policies.
It also urges the public to avoid spreading false information capable of disrupting ongoing rescue operations.
The kidnappings occur between May 13 and May 15 during separate attacks in both states.
In Borno, gunmen attack schools in Askira Uba and Chibok local government areas, abducting dozens of pupils and residents, many of them primary and secondary school students.
In Oyo State, armed men invade communities in Oriire Local Government Area and abduct schoolchildren, teachers and residents.
Among the victims is mathematics teacher Michael Oyedokun, who is later reportedly killed by the attackers.
The affected schools include Baptist Nursery and Primary School and Community Grammar School.
Meanwhile, the Borno State Government relocates students from Government Day Secondary School, Mussa, to a safer school in Uba under emergency protection measures.
President Bola Tinubu earlier directed security agencies to strengthen protection around vulnerable schools nationwide.
