LAGOS, Nigeria – An advocacy group, Edge Foundation, has launched a campaign in Lagos to educate children on the dangers of bullying, sexual abuse and child labour.
The sensitisation programme, held at St John Catholic Church in Oshodi on wednesday during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, encourages children to speak out against abuse and prioritise their safety.
Founder of the organisation, Casmir Ozuruigbo, says the initiative is driven by a passion to protect vulnerable children from unsafe environments.
“If we are honest with ourselves as adults, many of us experienced some form of abuse while growing up,” Ozuruigbo says.
He stresses the need for children to understand their rights and live free from intimidation, exploitation and fear.
Ozuruigbo also links growing insecurity in Nigeria to declining confidence in education among children following recent school abductions in parts of Oyo and Borno states.
“When children no longer feel safe in school, they begin to withdraw from education,” he says.
The campaign focuses on communities such as Oshodi, Agege, Mushin and Ajegunle, where many children face difficult living conditions and social inequality.
Ozuruigbo says the foundation has secured approval from the Oshodi Local Government to extend the sensitisation programme to public primary schools in the area.
The programme features practical sessions teaching children how to identify abuse, bullying and the proper channels for reporting such incidents.
Child rights advocates say awareness campaigns remain critical in addressing abuse, exploitation and violence affecting children across Nigeria.
