SOKOTO, Nigeria – Hundreds of residents across six communities in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State have been thrown into hardship after a powerful windstorm tore through homes, destroyed rooftops and injured several people, forcing emergency officials to begin rapid disaster assessments.
The affected communities — Nasarawa Tudu, Nasarawa Rahi, Kofar Attahiru, Danyali, Illela Takalmawa and Mai Banche — recorded widespread destruction following the storm, which residents described as one of the most severe weather incidents witnessed in recent months.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in a statement posted on its official X platform on Sunday after emergency response officials conducted on-the-spot inspections across the affected settlements, said several buildings suffered extensive structural damage, leaving many families exposed to harsh weather conditions and unsafe shelter environments.
“Many houses had their rooftops blown off, walls collapsed, and living spaces severely damaged by the storm,” NEMA stated.
Although most residents were not entirely displaced, the agency noted that many households were struggling to cope due to the destruction of homes and limited resources for immediate rebuilding.
Emergency officials engaged traditional leaders and affected families to determine the scale of losses and identify urgent humanitarian needs, including shelter materials, household items and medical support.
“The team engaged community leaders and affected residents to ascertain the extent of destruction and identify immediate humanitarian needs,” the agency added.
The disaster assessment also focused on identifying vulnerable households requiring urgent intervention, especially women, children and elderly residents exposed to unsafe living conditions after the storm.
NEMA assured residents that findings from the assessment exercise would guide the deployment of relief materials and humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
“The Agency also reiterated its commitment to responding promptly to disaster situations and strengthening resilience among vulnerable communities,” the statement said.
