ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Army has raised alarm over fraudulent social media accounts impersonating senior military officers, warning Nigerians against falling victim to online scammers using fake identities to deceive the public.
The Army disclosed on Sunday that cybercriminals had created counterfeit Facebook profiles in the name of the Deputy Chief of Standards and Evaluation (Army), Major General Raymond Utsaha, while displaying the photograph of the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi.
Military authorities said the fake accounts were designed to manipulate unsuspecting individuals, solicit money and obtain sensitive information through deceptive online interactions.
“The accounts are not linked to the Nigerian Army or the officers being impersonated,” the statement stressed.
The Army warned citizens against responding to suspicious friend requests, unofficial financial demands or confidential discussions linked to the fake profiles.
It also clarified that senior military officers do not use personal social media accounts to award contracts, seek financial assistance or conduct official military business online.
The development highlights growing concerns over cyber impersonation and digital fraud targeting Nigerians through fake profiles of government and security officials.
The Army urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious online activities to relevant security agencies.
Military authorities further reaffirmed their commitment to tracking and prosecuting cybercriminals involved in impersonation and other fraudulent schemes.
