OSUN, Nigeria – Osun State University (UNIOSUN) secures final regulatory approval to graduate medical students after the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) confirms the institution meets national training standards.
The approval was announced during a visit by MDCN officials led by Registrar Fatimah Kyari to the Osun State Government House in Osogbo, marking a significant milestone for the university’s College of Medicine.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke welcomes the development, describing it as a major breakthrough for medical education in the state and a boost to Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke pledges continued investment in facilities and academic standards to strengthen the institution’s medical training capacity.
Representing the registrar, Deputy Registrar Nnaemeka Nwakanma says the council grants approval after a rigorous accreditation process that assesses laboratory equipment, hospital infrastructure and the availability of qualified teaching personnel.
According to him, the MDCN maintains strict oversight of medical education in Nigeria to ensure graduates meet international standards.
“The council evaluates facilities, manpower and training infrastructure before determining admission quotas for medical programmes,” Nwakanma explains.
Governor Adeleke notes that strengthening medical education is vital to addressing Nigeria’s healthcare challenges, particularly the migration of trained doctors abroad.
He expresses optimism that UNIOSUN will expand its admission quota for medicine and allied programmes ahead of the next accreditation review.
The university has significantly upgraded its training facilities in recent years, including the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital in Osogbo.
The hospital, donated by Nigerian philanthropist Folorunso Alakija, supports clinical training and medical research for students and healthcare professionals.
