President, Bola Tinubu
ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu will address world leaders at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during its high-level General Debate in New York on Wednesday, September 24.
According to the UN’s provisional list of speakers, Tinubu is scheduled to speak during the afternoon session, around 8:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. Nigerian time).
He will be the 17th speaker on the second day of the debate.
The debate will feature 195 leaders, including 98 heads of state, 44 heads of government, and several vice presidents and ministers. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will open proceedings, followed by U.S. President Donald Trump, as per tradition.
The debate theme is “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.”
Last year, Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria, unusually maintaining Tinubu’s slot on the first day. Diplomats credited this to Nigeria’s goodwill and diplomatic influence at the UN.
The high-level week, from September 22 to 30, will include commemorations of the UN’s 80th anniversary, a Climate Summit, discussions on the Palestine-Israel conflict, an SDG moment, and a global dialogue on AI governance.
Annalena Baerbock of Germany presides over UNGA 80, becoming the fifth woman in history to lead the Assembly. She pledged inclusive leadership in tackling crises from climate change to poverty.
