ABUJA, Nigeria – The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) urges Nigeria’s competition regulator to investigate major technology companies over alleged market abuse and algorithmic harm.
In a formal complaint to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, SERAP accuses firms including Google, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, X, TikTok, Amazon and YouTube of undermining Nigerian media, consumers and democracy.
“Opaque algorithms and offshore revenue extraction allow these platforms to shape Nigeria’s digital economy without accountability,” SERAP says.
In a Sunday statement signed by Deputy Director, SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare, the complaint calls for a public hearing into alleged algorithmic discrimination, data exploitation and market dominance.
SERAP warns that unchecked practices threaten media freedom, privacy rights and fair competition, particularly ahead of future elections.
The group cites South Africa’s competition probe into Google as evidence that regulatory intervention can restore transparency and protect local media.
It urges the FCCPC to mandate algorithmic disclosure, impose sanctions where necessary and establish compensation mechanisms for affected Nigerian media organisations.
Failure to act, SERAP warns, could prompt legal action in the public interest.
