LAGOS, Nigeria – Traders at Sandgrouse Market on Lagos Island now gain steady access to clean water as the Rotary Club of Lagos Central installs a borehole and power generator, addressing long-standing sanitation challenges in one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs.
The intervention, formally handed over on Friday, targets poor hygiene conditions that expose traders and customers to waterborne diseases, particularly during peak trading hours. The borehole, supported by a dedicated generating set, guarantees uninterrupted water supply regardless of public power outages.
Rotary Club President, Elizabeth Ajilore, says the project aligns with Rotary International’s mission to strengthen public health and community resilience.
“Clean and accessible water is not a luxury. It is a foundation for health, dignity and economic productivity, especially in a market environment like this,” Ajilore says.
She explains that the initiative supports four Rotary focus areas: water, sanitation and hygiene; community empowerment; environmental sustainability; and disease prevention.
District Governor, Lanre Adedoyin, says the project follows a needs assessment that identifies water scarcity as the market’s most urgent problem.
“Our assessment shows that without clean water, traders struggle daily. This borehole creates a lasting solution that improves livelihoods and public health,” Adedoyin says.
Market leaders, Babaloja Aderinto Kamarudeen and Iyaloja Modinot Ayinke, commend the Rotary Club, pledging responsible use and maintenance of the facility.
They say reliable water access will reduce health risks, improve food handling practices and enhance overall market hygiene, benefiting thousands of traders and shoppers daily.
