Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu
ABUJA, Nigeria – First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu urges government agencies, communities and institutions to embrace evidence-based strategies to combat rising child sexual exploitation in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2025 World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in Abuja on Tuesday, she warns that compassion alone cannot shield vulnerable children.
“Our responsibility goes beyond caring words,” she says. “Creating a safe space for children requires deliberate, informed actions supported by accurate data, research and effective policies.”
The global commemoration, introduced by the Council of Europe in 2015 and later adopted by the UN in 2022, focuses on strengthening national protection systems and promoting healing for survivors.
Mrs Tinubu stresses that parents, religious leaders, civil society, community influencers and young people must share responsibility for preventing abuse. She concludes with a prayerful appeal: “May God watch over all our children.”
