OWERRI, Nigeria – Police in Imo State seal a hotel and private mortuary after discovering decomposed and mutilated bodies, raising suspicions of an illegal organ-harvesting operation, authorities say.
The facilities, located in Umuhu autonomous community in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area, are allegedly owned by a suspected kidnapper now declared wanted.
The weekend raid follows a tip-off and involves security operatives, health officials, a pathologist, local government representatives and vigilantes.
Confirming the operation on Monday, police spokesperson Henry Okoye says the mortuary found housing bodies in unhygienic conditions suggestive of criminal activity.
“At the mortuary, decomposed and mutilated corpses were discovered, raising strong suspicions of illegal organ harvesting,” Okoye says.
Both the hotel and mortuary are sealed on the directive of the state government, while forensic experts document and secure exhibits recovered from the suspect’s residence.
The Imo State Police Command launches a full investigation into a potential criminal network linked to kidnapping and body trafficking.
“Maximum security has been deployed along the Owerri–Aba Expressway,” Okoye adds, assuring travellers of safety during the festive period.
