OGUN, Nigeria – The Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) announces plans to increase rural allowances for teachers, as the state intensifies efforts to strengthen education delivery in underserved communities.
TESCOM Chairman, Biodun Sanyaolu, disclosed the plan on Thursday during a media briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Sanyaolu says the proposal aligns with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to improving teachers’ welfare and motivating those serving in rural areas. “To ensure fairness, TESCOM has categorised secondary schools into urban, semi-urban and rural locations,” he explains. “This determines which teachers qualify for the incentive.”
He dismisses long-standing perceptions that teachers’ rewards are delayed or neglected. “Gone are the days when teachers’ rewards were said to be in heaven,” Sanyaolu adds.
Addressing concerns over staff shortages, the chairman insists that the commission’s redistribution exercise ensures balanced placement of teachers across public secondary schools.
He notes that the deployment of Ogun Teach interns to rural schools demonstrates the government’s resolve to close educational gaps between urban and rural areas and improve learning outcomes statewide.
Education stakeholders view the move as a strategic step towards boosting morale, retention and quality teaching in remote communities, where staffing challenges have historically affected performance.
