OGUN, Nigeria – The Ogun State Government launches a 2026 statewide livestock vaccination drive targeting more than 200,000 animals to strengthen food security, protect livelihoods and curb zoonotic diseases.
Flagging off the campaign at the Obafemi Owode Local Government Secretariat on Wednesday, Agriculture and Food Security Commissioner Bolu Owotomo say the initiative builds a resilient livestock sector capable of driving growth and reducing poverty.
Cattle, sheep and goats will receive vaccines against four major transboundary animal diseases, while dogs and other small animals will get free anti-rabies shots. Authorities say trained veterinary teams, sufficient vaccines and a monitoring framework are deployed statewide.
“Vaccination is a shared responsibility,” Owotomo says. “It protects your investment, your livelihood and the wider agricultural economy.”
Obafemi Owode is chosen for the launch due to its role as a major livestock transit hub critical to disease surveillance. Director of Veterinary Services Dr Taiwo Jolaoso says the programme targets highly contagious diseases that cause high mortality, productivity losses and trade disruptions.
“This is preventive,” Jolaoso says. “It is about safeguarding animal health and the well-being of residents.”
