ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the revival and establishment of functional sick bays in all public primary and secondary schools across the state to strengthen school health services.
The motion, sponsored by Damilola Soneye (Obafemi Owode Constituency), was supported by Majority Leader Yusuf Sherrif and other lawmakers during Tuesday’s plenary.
“Functional sick bays will enable early diagnosis, first aid delivery, and reduce avoidable health risks among students,” Soneye said.
He stressed that a healthy learning environment is essential for pupils’ well-being and academic performance.
Other legislators — including Hon. Olakunle Sobukanla, Yusuf Amosun, Babatunde Tella, Damilare Bello, Waliu Owode, Oluseun Adesanya, and Lukman Adeleye — supported the motion, calling for qualified personnel to manage the facilities.
The Assembly also directed the Ministries of Health and Education, Science and Technology to collaborate on a standardised school health policy.
“Health education must go hand in hand with classroom learning,” Sobukanla said.
Lawmakers further recommended that graduates of the State Polytechnic of Health Technology, Ilese, be employed to operate the bays and urged private schools to establish first-aid units and health clinics.
The resolution aligns with Ogun’s broader goal of improving student welfare and preventing school-related health emergencies.
