LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader Shamusideen Oladiti, popularly called “Shameleon,” on charges of murder, conspiracy, and grievous harm.
The 55-year-old defendant appeared before an Ebute Metta Magistrate Court in Yaba on Tuesday over the alleged killing of dispatch rider Imam Ramon. Prosecutors say the offence contravenes Sections 223, 411, and 245 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
Police investigators disclosed that the altercation occurred between August 27 and September 17, 2025, when Ramon allegedly scratched Oladiti’s vehicle on Tapa Street, Lagos Island. “Eyewitnesses told us the rider was repeatedly struck with a helmet and fists by the defendant and his associates,” a police source revealed.
Ramon later died at the Lagos Island General Hospital, Marina, from injuries sustained in the assault. Another victim, identified as Omale Samuel, was also hospitalised after being attacked during the incident.
Oladiti pleaded not guilty, but Magistrate Tunde Olatunji ordered his remand while awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The arraignment has sparked debate over recurring violent clashes linked to transport union leaders in Lagos. Civil society groups say it underscores the need for accountability and reforms within the state’s transport sector.
“This case must serve as a deterrent. No one should be above the law,” said Lagos-based rights advocate Esther Akande.
The case will be recalled in court after the DPP issues formal legal advice.
