ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) orders LPG retailers in Ogun State to halt unsafe gas decanting, warning of strict sanctions for violators.
State Coordinator, Akinyemi Atilola, issues the directive during a safety workshop focused on risks in gas retail operations.
“Decanting leads to overfilling, leaks, fires and explosions. It must stop immediately,” he says.
Atilola explains that LPG retail falls under a regulated cylinder exchange model, but illegal transfer of gas between cylinders remains widespread. He confirms five outlets were sealed in 2025 for safety breaches.
The authority pledges intensified enforcement and urges operators to adopt best practices to protect lives and property.
