ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory Chapter, is urging security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of Dr. Chinonye Nwachukwu, a young medical graduate who was abducted in Abuja over two weeks ago.
Nwachukwu, who studied medicine in Ukraine and recently returned to Nigeria to begin her residency, was kidnapped on 21 October while heading to Garki Hospital, where she works. Her captors have reportedly demanded ransom and warned against security interference.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, NMA-FCT Chairman, Dr. Emeka Ayogu, expressed deep concern over her prolonged captivity.
“The family has not been allowed to speak with her, and her condition remains unknown. We call on security agencies to intensify coordinated rescue operations,” Ayogu said.
Ayogu noted that the case had been reported to the DSS, the FCT Police Command and the Office of the FCT Minister, but progress remained unclear.
He warned that the association may consider escalated action if there is no breakthrough soon.
NMA-FCT Vice Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Nasiru, appealed for calm among members but stressed the emotional toll the incident has taken.
“Doctors are anxious. A colleague who returned to serve her country is now in captivity,” Nasiru said.
Chairman of the Nigeria Dental Association (FCT), Dr. Theophilus Agho, made a direct appeal to the abductors:
“She came home to contribute to national health. We appeal for her safe release.”
The association commended ongoing security efforts but stressed the need for faster and coordinated intelligence-led rescue operations.
The incident has reignited national debates on health worker security, rising kidnappings and weak emergency response systems in Nigeria.
