ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) declares a nationwide protest for December 17, demanding urgent government action to address worsening insecurity across the country.
In a statement released on Monday, Acting General Secretary Benson Upah says the decision follows a resolution by the union’s National Executive Council.
The protest begins at 7:30am from Labour House in Abuja’s Central Business District, with workers and civil society groups marching along approved routes. “The rally will be peaceful,” Upah says, adding that affiliate unions and state councils are mobilised for participation.
The NLC cites persistent banditry, kidnappings and violent attacks as reasons for the action, describing insecurity as a direct threat to workers’ lives and livelihoods.
While the union does not outline specific policy demands, it calls for “urgent and sustained action by the state” to restore safety nationwide.
It remains unclear whether similar demonstrations will be held simultaneously in other cities.
