LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federal Government has issued a fresh flood alert for Lagos and 13 other states, warning that 52 communities face heavy rainfall between September 16 and 18.
The warning, signed by Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, listed high-risk states as Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Adamawa, Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina, Rivers, Imo, Sokoto, Ondo, and Lagos.
The advisory comes just days after authorities urged residents in flood plains along Rivers Gongola, Benue, and Niger to evacuate.
Already, Adamawa has been hit hard, as a downpour lasting from 4 a.m. to noon on Tuesday flooded parts of Yola and nearby communities, the National Emergency Management Agency confirmed.
In Lagos, commuters endured chaos after last Monday’s rainfall submerged parts of Ikorodu Road, triggering gridlock from Anthony to Odo-Iyalaro Bridge.
State officials are urging citizens to take preventive measures.
Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, appealed for responsible practices, stressing that improper waste disposal and construction on flood plains worsened the crisis.
“While we cannot control the weather, we can work together to mitigate its impact. Responsible practices are crucial steps in this fight,” Wahab said.
