ABUJA, Nigeria – Prices of major staples—including beans, garri, maize, and tomatoes—drop further across Nigeria, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) September 2025 Selected Food Prices Watch report.
The agency states that 1kg of brown beans fell by 33.70% year-on-year, dropping from ₦2,738.59 in September 2024 to ₦1,815.76. Month-on-month, prices dipped by 1.74%.
White garri recorded a 25.51% annual reduction, falling to ₦871.78, with a further 6.52% decline from August figures. Maize prices also ease, dropping 16.57% year-on-year to ₦888.68.
Tomatoes follow the trend, declining 10.56% year-on-year to ₦1,279.84.
However, not all commodities fall. Local rice rises slightly by 1.99%, while boneless beef surges 21.79% year-on-year, although it drops marginally month-to-month.
The report highlights regional disparities: Enugu records the highest bean prices, while Yobe posts the lowest. Similar variations appear across rice, garri, maize and tomatoes.
NBS links the overall decline to government efforts to stabilise food supply. President Tinubu recently directed a Federal Executive Council Committee to remove barriers hindering free movement of food across states. The bureau says markets are responding positively to improved security and logistics.
