NASARAWA, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed over N5 billion worth of counterfeit, expired, and unwholesome products during a mass disposal operation in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The incineration, conducted Thursday at the Angwan Rere waste facility, follows months of enforcement raids across Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger, and Plateau states.
Director-General, NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by North-Central Zonal Director Kenneth Azikiwe, said the destroyed items were seized through sustained surveillance activities. The inventory included pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, cosmetics, cleaning agents, and industrial chemicals deemed unsafe for human use.
“Some of these products were intentionally hoarded, revalidated after expiry, and maliciously displayed for unsuspecting Nigerians by unscrupulous merchants of death,” Adeyeye said. She stressed that the destruction prevents the circulation of harmful goods that could endanger public health.
Interestingly, not all the items were confiscated. “Today, we are also disposing of expired products voluntarily surrendered by well-meaning business operators,” she added, applauding compliant traders.
Nasarawa Commissioner for Security and Safety Matters, Usman Baba, commended the agency’s vigilance and pledged state support. “NAFDAC’s interventions continue to save lives, and we will back every effort to rid markets of dangerous goods,” he said.
