OYO, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit and expired goods valued at over ₦20 billion in a sweeping public-health operation in Ibadan.
The destruction exercise, held Thursday at the Moniya dumpsite, targeted a mix of fake pharmaceuticals, dangerous cosmetics, contaminated foodstuffs, and expired additives that officials said posed severe health threats to consumers.
Deputy Director, Pharmaceutical Division, Investigation and Enforcement, Apapa, Lagos, represented NAFDAC Director-General Prof Mojisola Adeyeye at the event.
She said the products were seized from illegal manufacturers, importers, and distributors, while others were voluntarily surrendered by companies and trade associations aiming to comply with regulations.
“The estimated street value of the products destroyed today stands at ₦20 billion,” Uba confirmed. “This operation demonstrates NAFDAC’s relentless commitment to safeguarding public health.”
She urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid unregistered products, warning that counterfeit goods continue to circulate through informal markets. “Consumer awareness is our strongest defence against the dangers of substandard and falsified products,” she added.
“Together, we can protect the health and safety of all Nigerians,” she concluded.
The event was witnessed by representatives of the Ministry of Health and several security and regulatory agencies.
