LAGOS, Nigeria – At least 173 people will die during emergency incidents across Lagos State in 2025, as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responds to more than 1,100 emergencies, official data show.
A yearly review released by the agency records 1,156 emergency incidents between January and December 2025, marking a decline compared with the previous year.
Road traffic crashes account for the highest number of cases at 394 incidents, followed by tanker and truck accidents with 249 cases and fire outbreaks at 204.
February emerges as the busiest month, recording 122 emergencies, while Alimosho Local Government Area reports the highest number of incidents at 180. Eti-Osa and Ikeja follow with 144 and 139 cases respectively.
LASEMA says its Pre-Hospital Care Unit rescues and resuscitates 1,924 victims during the year. The breakdown includes 906 adult males, 1,003 adult females, 13 boys and two girls.
The agency records 173 fatalities, comprising 139 adult males, 32 adult females and two children.
Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu attributes improved emergency response capacity to sustained government support. Speaking at a staff retreat, he says LASEMA remains fully prepared for 2026.
“Our strength lies in the dedication and professionalism of our workforce,” he says, urging residents to avoid risky behaviour.
