Lagos Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government says it records 737,340 traffic violations through Automated Number Plate Recognition cameras as authorities intensify technology-driven transport reforms across the state.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the figures on Monday during a ministerial press briefing marking the third anniversary of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s second term.
Osiyemi says intelligent traffic systems and digital surveillance infrastructure significantly improve traffic monitoring, compliance enforcement and road management across Lagos.
According to him, the state issues 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates and processes 56,876 driver licences, including fresh applications and renewals.
He says handheld smart devices under the Artezia and Soft Alliance Traffic Management Systems capture traffic infractions in real time, reducing enforcement bottlenecks and improving transparency.
Beyond road enforcement, the commissioner says the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line transports more than 3.5 million passengers, with daily trips increasing from 57 to 90.
Three additional train sets comprising 12 coaches have also been introduced, while the Blue Line extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko is expected to be completed by early 2027.
Osiyemi adds that work progresses on the proposed 68-kilometre Green Line, projected to move 35,000 passengers per hour upon completion.
In the road transport sector, Lagos Bus Services Limited transports more than 60 million passengers between May 2019 and February 2025, while the government spends ₦14.9 billion on fare subsidies.
The state also advances clean transportation initiatives through compressed natural gas and electric buses.
Osiyemi says pilot electric buses operating on Bus Rapid Transit corridors transport more than 150,000 passengers within 90 days while preventing over 200,000 kilograms of emissions.
“The administration remains committed to building a safe, integrated, technology-driven and sustainable transport system,” he says.
