LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has sealed a property in Ikoyi over sewage pollution, accusing the owners of discharging untreated wastewater into a public canal and creating environmental and public health risks.
Officials of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office carry out the enforcement on Wednesday after investigations confirm complaints from residents about the illegal discharge.
The affected property is located at No. 5 Manuwa Street, Ikoyi.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announces the action on his official X account, saying the premises is sealed for the “deliberate and continuous discharge of untreated sewage into the canal via a non-functional and moribund sewage treatment plant.”
He says inspectors also find the property in an unsanitary condition, resulting in offensive odours, environmental pollution and potential health hazards for nearby residents.
According to Wahab, investigations conducted after public complaints confirm the environmental violations.
He urges residents, developers and property owners to comply with approved wastewater management regulations to protect public health and preserve the environment.
The commissioner warns that anyone found violating Lagos environmental laws will face appropriate sanctions, including prosecution where necessary.
He reiterates the government’s commitment to strict enforcement of environmental regulations and the elimination of sewage pollution across the state.
The enforcement forms part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing environmental sanitation campaign aimed at improving wastewater management, preventing pollution and ensuring a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
