LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has revealed that over 2,213 girls were victims of various forms of abuse between September 2024 and August 2025.
The disclosure was made by the Executive Secretary of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, during an interview with journalists on Saturday as part of activities marking the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child.
“Within the past year, the agency provided support to 8,692 survivors, of which 3,629 were children. Sixty per cent were girls — representing 2,213 victims — while 40 per cent were boys,” Vivour-Adeniyi said.
She noted that children aged zero to nine years remain the most vulnerable to physical, sexual, emotional, and neglect-related abuses. The agency, she said, offers holistic interventions that address both physical and emotional trauma.
“We provide counselling, medical care, and psychosocial support. Through play therapy, we teach children that violence is unacceptable and that conflict can be resolved peacefully,” she explained.
Vivour-Adeniyi added that in severe cases, the agency rescues and relocates victims or their families to ensure their safety.
“Sometimes, we relocate children or entire families, especially when the abuse becomes public in the community,” she said.
The DSVA also collaborates with the Ministry of Youth and Social Development to protect children whose parents or guardians are perpetrators.
