LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command has denied reports alleging that officers attacked residents during the Oworonshoki demolition exercise.
Police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, in a Sunday statement, said, “The reports are entirely false and mischievously published to mislead the public.”
The Command explained that the demolition was led by the Lagos State Department of Urban Development and Planning in collaboration with the Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences, following months of official notices and compensation to affected occupants.
“The police were only deployed to maintain law and order,” the statement added. “At no time did officers engage in violence, harassment, or collaborate with hoodlums.”
However, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) accused the Lagos State Government of violating a valid court injunction halting demolitions in the area. “The action is gross contempt and flagrant disobedience of the court,” Falana said.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while supporting lawful government initiatives that promote peace and urban renewal.
