Lagos clean cookstove with emissions reduction campaign banner
LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State pledges full support for distributing clean cookstoves to 80 million Nigerian households, a move expected to cut emissions and promote public health.
Rotimi Akodu, Special Adviser on Environment, said, “Mr Governor is fully involved. Lagos will benefit optimally as we reduce carbon emissions and protect coastal communities from climate change impacts.”
The initiative, led by Greenplinth Africa, includes distributing stoves free, alongside ₦10,000 monthly stipends and health insurance. The programme will also plant four billion trees, positioning Nigeria to earn up to $5 billion annually from carbon credits.
Babatunde Aina, Group Financial Officer of Greenplinth Africa, described it as “climate justice delivered with dignity.” Experts emphasised economic and health benefits, including reducing indoor air pollution and cooking costs.
Eight states, including Lagos, Niger, Enugu, and Delta, will participate. The project aims to integrate Nigeria into global carbon markets while addressing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
