Sheleru Sadiq arrested for drug trafficking
ABUJA, Nigeria – A legislative aide at the Lagos State House of Assembly is arrested after operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) discover 40 kilogrammes of cannabis hidden inside his home in Ibeju-Lekki, authorities say.
The suspect, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, 45, was taken into custody on 2 March 2026 following an intelligence-led operation by anti-narcotics officers.
In a statement issued Sunday in Abuja, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi says investigators raid the property after receiving credible intelligence linking the suspect to drug trafficking.
“A search of the residence leads to the recovery of 40 kilogrammes of skunk concealed in one of the rooms,” Babafemi says.
Skunk is a high-potency strain of cannabis commonly trafficked in illicit drug markets.
According to the agency, Olalekan allegedly admits during interrogation that the drugs recovered from the residence belong to him.
Authorities also confirm that the suspect currently serves as a legislative aide at the Lagos State House of Assembly, although his exact portfolio within the legislature is not disclosed.
Before entering state politics, Olalekan reportedly served two consecutive terms as councillor representing the Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area.
The NDLEA says the arrest forms part of ongoing operations targeting drug trafficking networks across the Lekki corridor, an area authorities say has witnessed several recent drug-related arrests.
In February, the agency arrested Kolapo Oladapo, a senior executive at the real estate firm Trans Fortress Global Resources, over a separate alleged drug trafficking operation within the same axis.
NDLEA officials say investigations into Olalekan’s case remain ongoing as authorities work to determine the scope of the suspected network.
The agency has not yet announced formal charges or a court date.
NDLEA maintains that the crackdown reflects its continued commitment to dismantling narcotics trafficking operations across Nigeria.
