Street beggars along a busy road in Lagos
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has arrested 107 beggars and suspected miscreants during a street enforcement operation aimed at restoring order in public spaces.
State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab disclosed the arrests in a statement on Tuesday following patrols across Agege and Ketu.
According to Wahab, the operation begins in Agege, where officials apprehend 25 beggars during routine monitoring.
“During our ongoing monitoring and enforcement patrol today, 25 beggars were arrested in Agege as part of efforts to address street begging and restore order in public spaces,” he says.
The enforcement team later expands the operation to Ketu, where more individuals are taken into custody.
“The patrol team has since moved to Ketu, and as of 1200hrs, a total of 86 beggars, nine children, and 12 miscreants have been apprehended across the areas covered,” Wahab adds.
Authorities say those arrested will be profiled and transferred to relevant government agencies for further action.
“Those arrested will be profiled and handed over to the appropriate government agencies for further action in line with existing laws and social intervention protocols,” the commissioner says.
He stresses that the state government will continue enforcement operations to discourage street begging while protecting vulnerable persons.
“We will continue these operations to discourage street begging, protect vulnerable persons, and maintain order across Lagos,” Wahab adds.
Street begging has become a growing concern in Nigeria’s commercial capital, where officials say enforcement measures are necessary to manage urban order and social welfare.
