LAGOS, Nigeria – Seven individuals have been arraigned before a Lagos Special Offences Mobile Court for allegedly assaulting officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) during an environmental enforcement operation.
The suspects — Olamilekan Abdullahi, Akeem Olamilekan, Frank Tom, Sakiru Jamiu, Emmanuel Abiodun, Olarewanju Onyowale and Taiwo Yusuf — are arrested on March 8 within the Moshalashi Jimoh axis of Lagos Island during routine monitoring against illegal waste disposal.
According to the Lagos State Government on Thursday, the suspects were formally arraigned on March 10, 2026, before the Special Offences (Mobile) Court in the Ikeja Magisterial District.
Prosecutors file a five-count charge against the defendants, including conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, failure to patronise an approved waste operator, obstruction of officers, and assault.
“The prosecution charged the defendants on a five-count charge bordering on conduct likely to cause breach of peace, indiscriminate dumping of refuse at an unapproved location, failure to patronise an approved Private Sector Participant waste operator, obstruction of officers in the discharge of their duties, and assault,” the government statement says.
All seven defendants plead not guilty to the charges.
The court grants each suspect ₦200,000 bail with two sureties, including a recognised community leader and an employed relative.
The case was adjourned to April 24, 2026, for trial.
Pending fulfilment of bail conditions, the defendants remain in a correctional facility.
LAWMA warns that assaulting enforcement personnel or obstructing environmental operations is a serious offence.
“Acts capable of undermining environmental enforcement operations will be firmly addressed through appropriate legal channels,” authorities say.
