LAGOS, Nigeria – Six people die and three others sustain critical injuries after a fatal road crash along the Lagos-Abeokuta Motorway, authorities confirm.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps say the accident occurs around 9:55 a.m. at the Ilo-Awela axis near the toll gate and involves a truck and a tricycle.
TRACE Ota Divisional Commander Salau Hammed explains that eyewitnesses report the truck lost control due to brake failure before ramming into the tricycle, other vehicles and pedestrians.
“Six deaths, comprising five males and one female, were recorded, while three persons were critically injured,” Hammed says.
The bodies of the deceased are deposited at Ifo General Hospital mortuary, while the injured receive treatment at Ota General Hospital. Emergency responders work to clear wreckage from the highway as traffic officers manage congestion and restore movement.
Hammed urges motorists to avoid speeding and ensure proper vehicle maintenance, warning that mechanical failure remains a leading cause of fatal crashes on major highways.
