KATSINA, Nigeria – Panic grips communities in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State after suspected bandits issue a six-day ultimatum demanding livestock, triggering mass displacement.
Residents say armed groups demand 700 cattle and 1,000 sheep, threatening widespread attacks if communities fail to comply.
A local resident, speaking anonymously, describes escalating violence linked to a bandit leader identified as Muhammadu.
“He came with about 200 motorcycles and moved over 1,700 animals before demanding the same number from us as tax,” the resident says.
The threat affects several communities, including Sukuntuni, Unguwar Tsamiya, Magama, Walawa and Tudun Wulli, with reports of armed men moving freely.
The ultimatum forces many residents to flee, with some relocating to nearby towns and others seeking refuge in Kano State.
“About 10 villages are now deserted,” the resident adds.
Civil society leader Abdurrahman Abdullahi blames worsening insecurity on weak government response.
“If nothing is done, this will continue indefinitely,” he says.
However, government spokesperson Maiwada Dammalla urges caution, suggesting the letter may be intended to incite fear.
“The government is working tirelessly to protect lives and property,” he says.
Despite assurances, tension remains high as displaced residents weigh the risks of returning home.
