ABUJA, Nigeria – The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals have issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning of a nationwide strike from midnight on Friday, November 14, 2025, if their demands remain unresolved.
The industrial action is expected to disrupt healthcare services and academic activities nationwide, as JOHESU comprises key unions including the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.
JOHESU has been in prolonged negotiations with government authorities over salary disparities, welfare, and working conditions, particularly the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).
The union says the review has been pending for over 12 years, despite repeated commitments from the Federal Government.
In a letter dated October 30, 2025, addressed to the Minister of Labour and Employment, and signed by JOHESU Chairman Kabiru Minjibir and National Secretary Martin Egbanubi, the union accused the government of failing to honour the October 29, 2024, Memorandum of Understanding aimed at fast-tracking the CONHESS adjustment.
“This flagship demand has dragged the longest timeline in labour history,” the union stated, accusing government officials of repeatedly shifting responsibility to the yet-to-meet Presidential Committee on Salaries, which has not convened since August 2023.
JOHESU said its “patience has run out,” insisting that members will withdraw services nationwide if their demands are not met by the deadline.
