ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed five personnel died in September after being struck by reckless drivers while on duty.
Corps spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide said the incidents occurred across Ekiti, Ogun, Taraba, Jos, and Obollo Afor between September 6 and 24.
“These knockdowns are not statistics. They represent fathers, mothers, and breadwinners cut short while protecting Nigerian roads,” Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said in a statement on Tuesday.
He ordered immediate prosecution of the motorists involved and warned that the Corps will not tolerate assaults on its officers.
Beyond traffic risks, Mohammed noted operatives now face kidnapping and targeted attacks. “Our staff must be safe and alive to save others,” he said.
The Corps is intensifying collaboration with security agencies to safeguard personnel and installations. Families of the deceased were assured of support and honours for their service.
“We salute their courage. Nigerians must respect traffic laws and honour their memory,” Mohammed urged.
