ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government confirms the release of ₦152 billion to contractors following weeks of protests over delayed payments in the capital.
Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, announces the disbursement via her verified social media account on Thursday, stating that payments follow strict verification and financial regulations.
“All disbursements comply with due process. No verified contract, no payment,” she says.
The minister explains that the Ministry of Finance conducts rigorous checks before releasing public funds, insisting that accountability remains non-negotiable. She acknowledges the financial strain contractors face due to prolonged delays but says legal compliance protects national finances.
Uzoka-Anite also addresses reports of intimidation of ministry officials during the protests, urging calm and constructive engagement. “Dialogue remains open, but respect for institutions is essential,” she says.
The ₦152 billion payment forms part of broader efforts to clear verified liabilities while maintaining fiscal discipline amid revenue pressures. Analysts say the move could ease tensions in the construction and infrastructure sectors, where delayed payments often stall projects and trigger job losses.
The minister reassures contractors that additional verified claims will be processed consistently and fairly, signalling that protest actions will not replace institutional procedures.
The government frames the payment as a balance between contractor welfare and public accountability, stressing that financial transparency underpins economic recovery efforts.
