ABUJA, Nigeria – The Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, urges nursing mothers to practise exclusive breastfeeding, ensure full immunisation and shun female genital mutilation, describing the measures as critical to child survival.
She speaks at the Basic Health Centre, Asin-Ekiti, during the presentation of gifts to the first baby of the year.
“Anyone who contravenes established medical guidelines on childcare will be appropriately dealt with,” Oyebanji warns, stressing that the guidelines exist to protect children’s lives and futures.
She says adherence to medical advice supports healthy growth and long-term wellbeing, while also calling on parents to instill discipline and positive values in their children.
As part of the visit, the First Lady presents food items, baby supplies and cash to newborns delivered at the facility.
The Matron, Mrs Janet Fele, says the first baby—a girl weighing 2.5kg—was delivered shortly after midnight.
The baby’s mother, Mrs Esther Olarenwaju, thanked the governor’s wife for the support, describing it as encouraging.
The statement adds that Dr Oyebanji also visits correctional and care homes across the state, donating food and cash as part of her festive humanitarian outreach.
