BENIN CITY, Nigeria – The Edo State House of Assembly suspends its first 2026 sitting after bullets and gunshot holes are discovered on the roof of the legislative complex, triggering security concerns.
Lawmakers arrive for plenary on Tuesday amid heightened tension before leadership orders an immediate suspension and invites security agencies to investigate.
Majority Leader Jonathan Ebamewu confirms the development, saying the decision prioritises safety.
“We were ready to sit, but an incident was reported. We have invited the police and DSS to investigate thoroughly,” he says.
Security operatives seal and search the complex as legislators await a full report.
“Everything is calm, but we must allow security agencies to do their work before resuming,” Ebamewu adds.
Police officers remain on-site as investigations continue.
