EBONYI, Nigeria – The Ebonyi State Ministry of Education suspends two head teachers indefinitely following allegations of gross misconduct and sabotage linked to a viral video exposing poor learning conditions in public schools.
The suspension order, signed by Education Secretary Francis Nwonunku, accuses the school heads of denying pupils access to quality education and undermining the education policies of Governor Francis Nwifuru.
“You are hereby suspended indefinitely as the head teacher at the above school due to your gross misconduct,” the letter states.
Authorities direct the suspended officials to immediately hand over government property to the next-ranking officers.
The disciplinary action follows widespread outrage triggered by a viral video showing pupils studying in dilapidated classrooms with unfinished walls, poor infrastructure and inadequate learning facilities.
Sources say the affected teachers are suspected of leaking footage of the schools’ conditions online.
The video sparks criticism across social media platforms, with many Nigerians questioning the state of public education infrastructure in Ebonyi.
Education advocates warn that the incident highlights deeper structural challenges facing rural schools, including poor funding, overcrowded classrooms and inadequate teaching resources.
The state government has yet to announce whether further investigations or disciplinary measures will follow.
The controversy comes amid growing national conversations about the condition of public schools and the welfare of pupils in underserved communities across Nigeria.
