LAGOS, Nigeria – Two people were killed and three others critically injured on Meiran Road, Iyana Meiran area of Lagos on Wednesday, following a multi-vehicle collision involving a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.
The crash occurred near the Primary Health Centre when the mixer truck, reportedly travelling at high speed, suffered brake failure and rammed into a commercial mini-bus and four tricycles, leaving the vehicles badly mangled and passengers trapped in the wreckage.
In a statement signed by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the authority said, “Preliminary security findings revealed that the tragic occurrence was triggered by a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck which, while being operated at an inordinately high speed, suffered a sudden brake failure and consequently lost control.”
He added that LASTMA officials, with the help of passersby, swiftly rescued three severely injured victims and evacuated them to Mobonke Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police.
“To ensure the safety of responders and forestall secondary collisions, the Authority immediately cordoned off the entire corridor and instituted comprehensive traffic control and diversion measures,” the statement said.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the families of the victims and warned motorists against reckless driving, noting that “mechanical negligence and excessive speeding remain persistent and avoidable causes of fatal road crashes.”
Security operatives from the Meiran Police Division supported rescue efforts and traffic management, while the driver of the mixer truck reportedly fled the scene.
The incident comes days after another fatal crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, prompting renewed warnings by LASTMA for motorists, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and compliance with speed limits, especially this festive season.
