LAGOS, Nigeria – China firmly denies allegations linking its mining firms in Nigeria to illegal mining and terrorism financing, calling the claims misleading and harmful to bilateral relations.
In a statement on Thursday, the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria dismisses accusations contained in a bill introduced by some members of the United States Congress, which alleges Chinese companies pay armed groups for protection during mining operations.
“The accusations are false, baseless and damaging to China–Nigeria relations,” the embassy states.
Chinese officials say Beijing requires its citizens and businesses abroad to comply strictly with host-country laws and operate with zero tolerance for criminal activity.
“The overwhelming majority of Chinese mining companies in Nigeria have an exemplary record of compliance,” the statement says, adding that many firms support local employment, environmental protection and community development.
The embassy notes that Chinese mining interests have themselves suffered attacks from armed groups, underscoring China’s willingness to cooperate with Nigerian authorities to improve security and regulation in the sector.
It also criticises media reports that amplified the allegations, warning against misinformation capable of undermining diplomatic ties.
China reiterates respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and expresses readiness to deepen cooperation on sustainable mining and national security, while urging all parties to avoid spreading unverified claims.
