MAKURDI, Nigeria – At least 17 people are killed after gunmen attack Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State during Easter celebrations, authorities and residents confirm.
The assailants reportedly stormed the village on Sunday, opening fire on residents and setting homes ablaze, forcing many to flee into nearby bushes.
Local sources say several persons remain missing as search efforts continue, while families count losses following the destruction of homes and property.
Witnesses describe the нападение as sudden and coordinated, leaving widespread devastation in the agrarian community already grappling with recurring violence.
The attack underscores persistent insecurity in Benue, where rural settlements have faced repeated incursions by armed groups, disrupting livelihoods and deepening humanitarian crises.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia condemns the killings, describing the incident as “heinous” and unacceptable.
“There appears to be a pattern of calculated and selective attacks,” the governor says in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, assuring residents that perpetrators will be brought to justice.
He commends security agencies for their response and urges intensified operations to prevent further attacks.
Authorities confirm that investigations are ongoing, as tension remains high across affected communities.
Security analysts warn that continued violence in farming regions could worsen displacement and food insecurity across the state.
