LAGOS, Nigeria – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Lagos has declared an indefinite strike over what it describes as “amputated” salaries paid to its members.
The decision follows an emergency congress meeting of the union on Tuesday, according to a communiqué signed by the branch chairperson, Dr Idou Kehinde, and secretary, Dr Adesina Arikawe.
The union says the strike begins on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, and will continue until the university authorities settle all outstanding salary payments.
According to the communiqué, the decision comes after what the union calls “extensive and exhaustive deliberations” over salary deductions affecting members in January and February.
“The University discriminately paid an amputated salary in January 2026 to all members,” the statement reads.
It adds that lecturers on the Akoka campus received no Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), while those at the Idi-Araba campus received neither EAA nor the Clinical Academic Teaching Allowance (CATA).
“The University also unilaterally and wickedly paid an amputated February 2026 salary to all our members,” the union says.
ASUU describes the action as unacceptable and accuses the university administration of violating established labour standards.
“The action violates all the tenets of decency and clearly portrays the University Administration as wicked, unfeeling and satanic,” the communiqué states.
The union instructs its members to withdraw all academic services until the salaries are fully paid.
University management has yet to issue an official response to the strike announcement.
The development raises fresh concerns about academic disruptions in Nigeria’s public universities, where disputes over funding, salaries and welfare frequently lead to industrial action.
